With many forms under many names the path to meditation can easily become a maze in which the newcomer, not used to the twists and turns of mind, may become lost.
When beginning, it is as with most things, best to have a goal on which to aim and to be clear in your mind exactly what that goal is. Many mistake relaxation for meditation. Some relate the steps towards true meditation as meditation itself.
Relaxation is not meditation although many will say that meditation helps them to relax, but the truth is of course that one needs to be relaxed before opening the portal to the meditative path.
When relaxed the first step is to concentrate and here again concentration can take as many forms as there are differences in the human form itself. I was taught to concentrate on something living that I loved and in my case it was a rose.
The task set for me was to concentrate on creating the form of the rose from the stem with its thorns through the sepals to the petals in their brilliant colour to the perfume and the opening of the blossom to the fullness of all its beauty, until the rose held itself in my consciousness.
Some prefer, and it appears many of us in the West enjoy, a chant such as the A-u-m, or Om if you prefer, and others enjoy the ease of concentration with the mind blanked by Bach or some other composer.
The fact which I have learned is that it does not have to be as complex as the rose or Bach to swamp the consciousness, because again I must come back to one of my central themes of simplicity, when what could be more simple than a single letter which you can choose from your own alphabet and if in the West you don’t have to look far trying ‘A’ as a start.
When your concentration begins to waver in favour of a current concern it is so easy to bring the consciousness back to ‘A’. Having concentrated on the ‘A’, the letter itself will begin to assume a form of its own held almost as an illuminated letter form by itself for you to contemplate. There is nothing more for you to do than just to contemplate the letter.
In that form it brings into your consciousness the wonder of not only the alphabet in its entirety, but also the expansion through the revelation of the beauty and wonder of language itself and how this permits the communication between us all.
Language is no barrier since it is your letter, your alphabet, whether in hieroglyphs, pictures or signs that brings you to the point of communication with others of like mind.
This amazing attribute of the human race allows communication through verbal, written or telepathic linking one to another in the blessing of the internal creative process, through to the outer acceptance and the revelation of avenues of information, knowledge and wisdom closed off to most of the human race at this time.
The latter may seem farfetched to you but let me assure you that these avenues become eventually effective through that simple process of concentration, of concentrating on ‘A’.
When you become aware of these avenues your consciousness moves quite naturally into the mode of adoration of the Atma, which by chance starts with ‘A’, the aspect of the Divine that exists within us all. Called mergence by some where we merge with the Divine, ever present within and around us which I refer to as the Presence.
To me we are already in that mode, because the Divine is with us constantly, whether we like to admit it or not, it’s just in that moment we become aware of it and accept it through our waking consciousness, needing merely to accept and to become aware!
Of course becoming aware is one thing, and holding the awareness is the attribute of the Master for by experience according to the state of the consciousness I do not always reach the state of mergence which may be the same for some of you too. In fact of course the path through the portal to meditation may not be for you at all. Your choice!
Practice makes perfect though, and in those moments of joy we are only too willing to return to our HPT. One became of itself my moment of mergence on a twilight walk just now when I became aware of all there is, my only company a hawk hovering high above on the thermals with hardly a flutter of its finger-like wings in perfect peace and awareness in its own way, aware of much more than me with its specific vision and high vantage view.
I wish you have joined us in our Highly Precious Time today, with the Hawk, Hanukah & the Angel.
